The Open Studio on the 23rd of February, at 8:30pm we will also see the works of Edward Johansson (Mariehamn/Lemland, Åland Islands), Minna Öberg (Mariehamn, Åland Islands) and Anneloes Gerdien (Utrecht), Raquel Meyers (Cartagena), Glory Nkembo Moswala (Kinshasa), Ash (Ashley) Witham (Los Angeles/Berlin) and Myriam Gras (Tilburg) at Centro Negra.

 

Edward Johansson (Mariehamn/Lemland, Åland Islands) and Minna Öberg (Mariehamn, Åland Islands)

-Edward Johansson
Since 2014 Edward runs his own printmaking studio -Ahvaland- working both with personal and commissioned work. The studio is set up for letterpress printing on Heidelbergs, Vandercook printing press, and an intaglio section for copperplate printing.

He enjoys to challenge his skills and experience with new ideas and collaborations, but most comfortable working with text based projects and manual processes. His work tends to exist in the boundaries between art, crafts and design, finding fundamental that both- concept and technique- are properly considered and well executed.

-Minna Öberg
Minna’s studies consist of a BA in Fine Art at Novia University of Applied Sciences and a MA in Art and Design at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
A relevant experience for her has been taking part of a Baltic network called B7, including the seven largest islands in the Baltic. Making site-specific art at all the islands, visiting a new one each year, abandoned hotels, old power plants and all sorts of interesting places to interact with.
Minna enjoys working with used and recycled materials. Often she lets the time and the space decide the working method. Street art and innovative ways of using public space inspire her.

Anneloes Gerdien (Utrecht)
“As a girl I used to live on the Dutch countryside. Growing up in a rural environment close to nature, where living outside, simple life, silence, building and reuse are the main factors of daily life. This simplified lifestyle is one of the things that are still core values that I take with me in my artistic process and research.”

Anneloes Gerdien van der Vinne (1993) is a interdisciplinary artist working in the fields of painting, drawing and fine metalworking and combining visual journalism within the
creating processes.
In her visual journals, drawings, panels and her jewellery she expresses her fascination with natural evolution and emotions that occur in her daily life and diverse environments. She reflects this thinking throughout her whole body of work, inspired by the organic structures that surround us. She considers the potential for growth for each object and uses her intuition to share the value of each one.
Coming from fields of Fashion, Visual culture and Theory she strives to come up with tangible end products where growth and experiment is visual. Within her artistic work new environments are a starting point, which adds to her urge to go out and appear in unpredictable situations and surroundings. Closely observing from a philosophical and anthropological perspective and absorbing the natural behaviours of her surroundings is what she wants to reveal and capture within her art pieces. This allows her to get new incentives, unpredictable processes and in depth outcomes witch give meaning to her end products.
Anneloes Gerdien is mainly based in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

 

Raquel Meyers (Cartagena)
Raquel Meyers is a Spanish artist who defines her practice as KYBDslöjd (drawing / crafting by typing) with technology from the past. Woven with Commodore 64 characters sets, flickering in teletext, or fed to fax machines, her world of mythical creatures and dreamlike pilgrimages is one of patience and resolve. Frame-by-frame and glyph-by-glyph, we descend into a jagged wonderland where time stands still and chaos reigns.

Since 2004 she has performed at festivals like Transmediale, Piksel, Mapping, La Casa encendida and Cimatics, at 8bit events like Tokyo Blip Festival, Square Sounds Melbourne and the Playlist exhibition, as well at Liste Art Fair Basel, Ars Electronica Center, Alingsås Konsthall, Bonniers Konsthall, Xpo Gallery, Click New Media Arts Festival, Alt_Cph, HeK, BEK- Bergen Center for Electronic Arts, LABoral and iMAL.

 

Nkembo Moswala (Kinshasa)

Nkembo Moswala was born in 1989 in Kinshasa, DR Congo, where he today lives and works (Born in Kinshasa, he was raised in the municipality of Barumbu in 3 different neighborhoods renowned for being eventful, for gangsters who impose their laws and for the omnipresence of pubs along the roads where people feast until morning. For 2 years he is living and working in another municipality and district of Kinshasa, inhabiting it yet almost disconnected from the reality of the city that he frequents almost every day). Nkembo he earned a Bachelor Degree in Visual Arts in Académie des Beaux-Arts in Kinshasa, in 2011. Nkembo’s work was presented at the Yango Biennale in 2014 in Kinshasa. A beneficiary of the coaching of N’Goné Fall in September 2016, his project proposal was one of the best entries in an issue of a workshop organized by the Goethe institute.

His work is currently articulated around the notion of renaissance and renewal. Throughout his artistic journey, and in his creations, he has stressed the harmful nature of the global society we are living in. Our unbridled economy and consumption drive have caused lots of damage and suffering. Nkembo’s work on tarp, through the act of incision and branding, or Nzoloko , denotes the wounds that we, as citizens of this world, are enduring. Chaos cannot be an end. Looking at his direct environment, he sees signs and traces of cultural consumption. He sees waste, artefacts, despair, and hope. Art allows him to explore the transformative potential of today’s cultural consumption. From an initial will to denounce, he moves to visual and contemporary reinterpretations, exploring new mediums and compositions.

 

Ash Witham (Los Angeles/Berlin)Raised in a small town on the east coast of the United States, Ash now primarily works out of Los Angeles, California and Berlin, Germany. While at the University of California Los Angeles, Ash studied painting and drawing abroad in the French Riviera and Paris. In 2014, she graduated with honors from UCLA with a BA in Art and a minor in Art Education. During her studies she produced work across a range of mediums, favoring abstract painting, mixed-media assemblage, movement photography, and multimedia installations and performances. Her shared process approaches throughout these mediums are the utilization of found materials, the element of chance, and the temporality of movement.

Ash has performed and exhibited installations, photography, and sculptures in Los Angeles. Inspired from attending various movement intensives over the years in the US, Europe, India, and Mexico, Ash’s work has taken on a more bodily approach. Continuing to educate herself in topics like world cultures, interpersonal communication, positive psychology, and dance, she is dedicated to research and work that embodies themes such as vulnerability, empathy, healing, identity, human connection, and authentic expression. Currently, Ash is devoting time to dive deeper into her work and aims to broaden her outreach.

 

Myriam Gras (Tilburg)
“ My work explores the overlap between reality and storytelling, trying to portray the contrasts between the seemingly beloved adaptations of the increasingly digitized society and the related individual disturbance. By continuously experimenting with different kind mediums, I connect mostly synthetic materials and technological elements together- thematically or physically. By playing with the alienated and the known, I tend to shine a mild critical light on the nowadays.”
Absurdity and loneliness caused by the influence of modern ways of communication are a repetitive theme in the work. This goes back and forth from developments to implantation, illustrating the way in which humanity is at the same time unified by a desire for progress and individualized by phenomenological experiences. By implementing interactive elements one is forced to make contact, whether it is with the material or with other human beings. As a result the body becomes part of the composition and comments upon the fact that humanity is defined by its potential to create.
