Next November 24th, at 8:30pm, AADK Spain opens the doors of Centro Negra to share the processes of the artists in residence of November: Alice Weber (Australia / United Kingdom), Ranjit Ahuja (India / USA), Amanda Kay White (USA), Astrid Bink (Netherlands), Anyuta Wiazemsky (Russia / Belgium), Janet Ruth Davies (South Wales).

Alice Weber (Sydney / London)
Alice is an Australian artist living and working in London. Starting with the body as a site of tension between image and experience, Alice explores femininity, agency, desire and (dis)embodiment through her performance work. Her choreographies are seemingly purposeless performances of balance, repetition, flexibility and stillness, appropriating her own training as a classical dancer, to destabilise the rules and reproductions of the body. She has recently gained her MFA in Choreography from Laban, London (2018).

She has been research artist at Accademia Nazionale di Danza (Rome) and her work has been shown at Turner Contemporary (Margate), APT Gallery (London), The Place (London), Chisenhale Dance (London), Festival of Recorded Movement (Vancouver). She has delivered a number of research papers and performances including University of Bedfordshire, Trinity Laban, CoLab Festival, The Cube London. She has also worked as a performer for other artists, ranging from dance to contemporary visual art performance including at Delfina Foundation, Hauser & Wirth, The Performance Studio and Tanzcompagnie Giessen.

Ranjit Ahuja (Ajmer / Atlanta)
Born in Ajmer, India and currently residing and working in Atlanta, USA, his Professional Education has been in Design and Visual Communication in India and she has developed a great interest in Black and White Photography and its lab processes. Bachelor in Fine Arts Degree from Syracuse University, NY USA, Department of Experimental Studios. Ranjit has worked in B&W labs for over 20 years and around 15 years in Digital Imaging for press in the USA. “It would be safe to assume that my imagery is a combination of these professional pursuits”.

On a philosophical level his imagery is a combination of “abstraction and reality” and seeks to involve the viewer in his Visual studies between the “scientific and the artistic” forms of communication. He would like to research newer printing methods for superior artistic presentations and work on collaborative projects with writers and artists.

Amanda Kay White (Tustin)
Amanda Kay White’s research interests delve into the entanglement of bodily knowledge, embodied cognition, and spatial theory through the medium of choreography. Finding points of access to these physical collections of experience and memory has deepened her personal understanding of humanity. She is interested in generating a community and site-based choreographic engagement to explore shared experiences within Blanca.

Originally from St. Charles, Missouri, she currently lives in Orange County, California and is an adjunct lecturer/instructor of modern and jazz movement for Chapman University, Santa Ana College, and Orange County School for the Arts, USA. A desire to deepen her personal artistic practice led her to pursue an MFA in Choreography, which she received in April 2016 through Jacksonville University, USA. Her works have been presented regionally throughout Southern California as well as internationally at the inaugural Oulu Dance Hack in Finland. Amanda is also a founding company member and current dancer with Backhausdance, an international traveling contemporary modern dance company based in Southern California, USA.

Astrid Bink (Montfoort)
Recently graduated from HKU Utrecht, Netherlands, where Astrid had studied Fine Art and Design in Education. Astrid is part of an art collective called ‘Zonder Punt’. Together with this diverse group of young artists they reflect on each other’s work and organize exhibitions.

Astrid Bink is attracted and astonished by the pure beauty of nature. “Nature is constantly exposed to powerful forces, yet it still grows and flourishes. Meanwhile the world is being humanized. Landscapes are divided and arranged. Humankind uses technology to control nature. Roads are created and forests are planted and kept, so they stay easily accessible”. In her work she investigates the relationship between humans and nature, tries to capture the charm of nature and to give place to the controversial desire of control over the earth.

The residency is granted as the prize for the Young Master Award 2017 at Media Art Friesland Festival (MAF).

Anyuta Wiazemsky (Moscow / Ghent)
Anyuta Wiazemsky (1989, Moscow) is a young Russian-Belgian artist. She graduated from Law Academy in Moscow, Russia before deciding to pursue an artistic carrier. She studied Fine Arts in the Royal Art Academy in Ghent, Belgium. Her works have been shown in Moscow (RU), Ghent (BE), Leuven (BE), Kortrijk (BE), Brussels (BE), Rotterdam (NL), Hyderabad (IN). She currently follows educational program Master of Science in Sociologie in the Ghent University (BE).

Visually her work is diverse but there is a single notion running it, “like a golden thread throughout my practice: The notion of being a human attached to the artist’s existence”. She works with other people and their presence as an integral element of her work; it is through dialogue, through relation to the other, through understanding the commonalities and inescapable differences that she creates new work.

Janet Ruth Davies (Gwynedd / Wales)
Is a Welsh Artist currently studying a postgraduate Masters in Documentary Photography at the University of South Wales (formally Newport).

Janet Ruth´s photographic research interests are concerned with identity, mobility, and memory. She is interested in sensory perception of the environment and how feelings arise from interaction. Tim Ingold, a social anthropologist, writes of ‘art that gives form to human feelings and that a feeling is a mode of active perceptual engagement, a way of literally being touch with the world’. Her previous creative practice encompassed movement, choreography and performance. These disciples continue to inform her photographic process spatially and somatically. Through practice- led research I am interested in walking the physical and spatial perception of the liminal ‘in between’ mutable spaces where the town (industry) and rural (agriculture) intersect. I propose to investigate the commonly held idea of landscape as a view through a process of mapping the terrain.
