Me vuelvo tierra (I become earth) is an artistic research project that explores the correspondences between aurality, sound production, and territory, attending to the material, social, and ecological relations that shape listening. From a critical perspective, it seeks to expand sound art practices associated with the so-called “landscape,” shifting the emphasis away from representation and acoustic extractivism toward a situated and relational experience of sound.

What modes of relating to territory can be activated through sound practices without reproducing extractive logics? Me vuelvo tierra develops a protocol of situated listening experiences and sound-making, interaction, and co-presence, in which sound functions as a medium for establishing relationships of attention and reciprocity with the territory, rejecting the representational framework of the landscape.

During my residency at AADK, this protocol of situated listening experiences was developed through three sound interventions in and with non-urban environments in the vicinity of Centro Negra, throughout the Ricote Valley: Rambla de Benito, Rambla de las Salinas, and Pico de los Almeces in the Sierra de Ricote. The first two interventions took place at dawn; the third, at dusk.

These interventions consisted of sound practices in the form of improvisations–open compositions, using a selection of lightweight percussion instruments and materials (bells, idiophones, claves, drum, wood, stone, and metal), with a temporal development, density, and acoustic intensity chosen to remain non-invasive. Here, sounding is explored as an interface for listening with places and their ecosystems, and as a means of cultivating sensitivity to the bodily and perceptual orientations they propose.

With this project, I seek to foreground the embodied and situated dimension of sonic experience, understanding sound production as part of the web of perceptions, affects, and interactions that emerge between bodies (human and more-than-human) and the territory–– not as a source of resources, but as a relational fabric in which the act of sounding with becomes attention and coexistence.

Clara de Asís is an artist and experimental composer engaged with the correlations of acoustics, critical temporalities and the praxis of attention. Her work addresses questions regarding sound perception and how it is shaped by specific social and material contexts. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien.
