Sonora Sound Residency Program curated by Selu Herraiz | March 2025

About the Work

During my residency, my creative process has focused on in-depth research and artistic experimentation. One of the pillars of my research has been working with historian Ángel Río, with whom I have had conversations about the working class and the abandoned corrals in the area. Through these interviews, I have collected stories, anecdotes, and references that have nourished my work, giving me a solid foundation on which to develop my artistic ideas. Based on this research, I have created a musical instrument using remains from these abandoned corrals, giving shape to a historical and sound-based sculptural piece. This process has led me to engage in dialogue with various trades in the village, including the blacksmith and the scrap dealer, who have shared with me their knowledge of iron and other local materials.

In addition, I have begun to create a map of the town’s iron, a project that I plan to develop in the future and expand to other places. My intention is to print this map on biomaterials made from waste from Blanca, for which I will need more time and resources to complete. At the same time, I have explored creative sound processes in collaboration with other artists. Through improvisation sessions, we have generated experimental soundscapes, integrating different techniques and materials.

These sessions have been key to discovering new forms of interaction and artistic dialogue, allowing me to expand my expressive language and explore new creative possibilities. My work has also included research into sustainable art creation, as I believe it is essential not to generate more non-fungible material than already exists on the planet, especially in such a polluted world. The creation of a recycled instrument from recovered materials is part of this commitment to sustainability and the reuse of resources.

The combination of these lines of work has resulted in a dynamic and enriching creative process. Historical research has provided me with a solid conceptual framework, while sound experimentation has opened up unexpected paths in my artistic practice.
