About the Work
The project I worked on involved recording and reflecting on the landscape through group walks. I had never been there before. I had an intuition about Blanca’s natural environment based on what I had been told or what I had been able to reconstruct in my imagination from Google aerial views and images cut out from Instagram. How similar to that intuition and yet how radically different the physical experience of being in Blanca was.
A village that burrows into the rock, a rock that disintegrates and scatters, forming the village. And the bells. The daily life of people coming and going, going about their business, bringing all that reverie down to earth, never better said. And within that everyday life, there is a lot of getting together to do things: the folk group prepared Christmas carols and concerts, the women’s group threw themselves into performances, no matter how extravagant the proposals. A natural and peaceful intertwining of the permanent and intermittent inhabitants of Blanca, of which I felt a part during those weeks.
The project initially proposed led to some primitive soundscape and ambient exercises that have influenced my work to the point of including one of the pieces on my latest album. The experience of Blanca’s landscape and the interaction with the projects of the other residents opened the doors to a new world of experiments that I would like to continue developing. I observed how the architecture of the village blends into the landscape on the hillside leading up to the castle, I explored the sounds, stories, and instruments contained in the same geographical space converge.
