The skull, chest, abdomen and pelvis are the literal homes of our brain, heart, guts and pussy. These body parts and the vital organs inhabiting them (actually the pussy is not a vital organ, yet I’d argue it brings the most vitality) are the literal fleshy motherboards of our thought, emotion, intuition and sensation. It is my interest to invert the vertical hierarchy of these body parts and accurately translate their qualia.

Qualia (singular: quale) are the subjective, experiential qualities of conscious perception — the “what it’s like” aspect of experience.

I don’t think, therefore I am-ing…

BIO

Originally from Latje Latje country (Mildura) Australia, Louella May Hogan is a 2014 graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts in Naarm/Melbourne. She has danced in Australia and Europe over the past 11 years, freelancing with Cyril Baldy, Shelley Lasica, Bec Jensen, Sarah Aiken, Prue Lang, and Adam Linder.

She danced with the Royal Danish Theatre’s experimental and process driven company Corpus from 2018 to 2021, working with Bobbi Jene Smith, Hilde Sandvold, Frédéric Gies, Kristen Ryg Helgebostad, Tilman O’Donnell, and unperformed works by Eleanor Bauer and Nature Theatre of Oklahoma. Louella joined Ioannis Mandafounis’ improvisation focused Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company in 2023.

As well as Mandafounis, significant choreographers like William Forsythe and Thomas Hauart create new works on the company, touring to iconic international stages. In 2024 Mandafounis’ “À La Carte” featuring a solo with Louella, was nominated for a Faust As well as choreographic contribution from the role of a dancer/improviser, Louella also choreographs with her own practice. Notably, a solo commissioned by Roskilde Festival and “Snakes Slither, Cakes Sliver” performed at FrankfurtLAB. Louella credits her fellow dancers for profoundly influencing her artistry. For instance sensing Riley Watts’ weight and tender strength in a duet, responding to Thomas Bradley’s dynamics and decisions in durational improvisations, and embodying the wisdom of Cyril Baldy over years of dancing together.
