The pieces presented here are part of a series called How to explain water to fish. With this figurative work of marine animals, the artist intends to make visible that concepts are a human construct. Only we recognize the idea of water. For fish, it is nothing more than the element in which they live.
In his work, natural figures are opposed to the industrial material and making, dissolving nature and culture in each piece.
Each animal is made with a different technique. In one, Joaquín starts from clay modeling, from which he creates a plaster mold that later fills with metal fragments until completing the two halves of the figure that are finally welded together. Another is made on welds that he polishes and molds to completion. The third is a collage of welded pieces.
In this way, the artist explores the possibilities —not only conceptual but also constructive and technical— with which this versatile material allows.
