“C_M_8, Cuecas em 8” is a multidisciplinary show that combines dance, theater,
original soundtrack and photographic record of the creative process plus its exhibition.
Our cast is made up of artists of various nationalities based in
Porto, Portugal.
We are currently working with the communities of Lorca and Blanca on
issues of identity, representativeness, stigma and prejudice under the slogan “Woman
Foreign “.
When we are new to a place, we experience a set of concerns and
confrontations that condition our stay in that new universe.
“Cuecas en 8” pretends to be a kind of manifesto about the adaptation process
of a woman in a foreign country, based on the experiences of a set of
women, of different nationalities.
The information collected represents the difficulties and attitudes that, through stories
truthful, they will be interpreted on stage seeking the confrontation with stigmata that,
Despite the good reputation of Portuguese and Spanish hospitality, they remain,
camouflaged in the still inflexible Iberian customs.
Some of the questions that arise are:
– What does it mean to be a foreign woman in Portugal?
– What does it mean to be a foreign woman in Murcia?
– How this “Increasing stigma” affects differentially:
WOMAN + STRANGER + RACIALIZED + SINGLE + UNEMPLOYED
+ PHYSICAL DIVERSITY + PANDEMIC …
With certainty, this project will not be able to contemplate all the problems intrinsic to
this stigma. We have had many doubts about how to get this project
is sufficiently inclusive and meaningful to the community. Finally,
We understand that the most honest way is to start from our own experiences to
also incorporate other testimonials and other stories.
From my perspective (Ana Mula) this project reflects the constant desire to be in
two places at the same time and the feeling of belonging to two countries, to two cultures
or of not properly identifying with any place.
It is still not easy to be a woman – in any country and in any context. When formulating
this sentence, it is automatically filled with other women, other stories and
testimonies, of other “PANTIES IN 8”, of women who all run out of the house
the days to study, to work to take care of your family, to assume responsibilities, to live, to travel and to acquire life experiences. To emigrate
alone, to regroup your family or to find your own way.
It is important to note that when I speak of women, I speak of all the people who
they feel like women.
The project has the support of the Teatro Municipal do Porto, in co-production
with the Instável Company within the Instáveis Boxes Program; the center
Negra_AADK SPAIN de Blanca, the Cazalla-Intercultural Association (Lorca), the
Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Portugal) and the Teatro Circo Murcia.
