15 Dec Astrid Bink
Residency period: November 2018
Astrid came to Blanca without knowing what she was going to do or what techniques she would be using. She wanted to start a new process and let herself be inspired by the people and the surroundings of Blanca. She took some time to get used to the Spanish pace as she wandered around the village.
Experimenting with different techniques to find a way to capture her time in Blanca. Using empty tin cans from the groceries to build pinhole cameras. She used these camera’s to try to capture the surroundings of her “home” using sunlight. It has become a repetitive process. Most of the time the outcomes of the pinhole photographs were very unpredictable. It was an exploration finding a way to work with this technique as well as to deal with the unexpected results.
She decided to embrace these unexpected or even unwanted outcomes, just like she took care of the photographs she found shattered in an alley next to the church on the day she arrived to Blanca. The photos were lost and she has been looking for spots in her working space where they could fit and placed them there.
All these experiments and outcomes talk about the need of belonging and the traces of time.
The residency is granted as the prize for the Young Master Award 2017 at Media Art Friesland Festival (MAF).
