July 2018

María is in her first month as a resident.
Her work intertwines her research about the South of Spain with her reflections upon the concepts of migration, identity and coexistence of social groups. Both axes touch on her personal history: She was born in Spain but has migrated to the US. more than ten years ago.
For her, objects represent mediating elements in human relationships and interactions. That is why in this opportunity she is researching game boards as spaces for meeting and dialogue between different cultures. She revisits the Book of the Games of Alfonso the Wise, a manuscript of the twelfth century that represents for her a historical moment of tolerance and inclusion. From it she extracts patterns and chromatic palettes that later transfers to her work.
For these Open Studios, María has created an area for play and conversation where participants are invited to share stories and experiences of Blanca. Fragments of these stories will be used to develop an installation piece, which will be presented in her second month of residency.

The work of María intertwines her research about the history of the South of Spain with her reflections upon the concepts of migration, identity and coexistence of diverse social groups. These axes touch on her personal history: she was born in Spain but has migrated to the US. More than ten years ago.
The artists understand the objects as mediating elements in human relationships and interactions. After researching about game boards as spaces for meeting and dialogue between different cultures, she revisits the Book of the Games of Alfonso the Wise, a manuscript of the twelfth century that represents for her a historical moment of tolerance and inclusion. From it she extracts patterns and chromatic palettes, and got many people to share, in a playful way, their stories and their perspectives. The result is a textil piece composed by fragments of these stories in which many have participated in the contents and in the elaboration.
