ROTA Festival – Residency period: November – December 2023
During her residency in the framework of the ROTA Festival 2023, Dr. Juliana España Keller and her partner Alex Pépin showed their close relationship with the local community of Blanca, through their collaboration with the amateur theater group Las Atrevidas, who had previously participated with Juliana in another project.
The art of plant ‘deep listening’ can through the language of electronic music open up ways of thinking about ways of being, what happens in completely different notation scales, vibrational textures and tonal differences, and this is very exciting for the musicians about what we might learn from them listening and responding. Juliana E. Keller proposes that science refines our ability to see and extends our eyes into many fields. Indigenous ways of knowing, to paraphrase the indigenous botanist and thinker Robin Wall Kimmerer, verbalise that we know a thing when we know it not only with our physical senses, with our intellect, but also when we engage in our intuitive ways of knowing emotional knowing and spiritual knowing. What he is trying to reveal is the fact that plants have extraordinary capacities, with sounds similar to humans, but actually plants perceive their own environment, respond to their environment, in incredibly sophisticated ways.
