ROTA is an annual experimental music and collective creation festival that emerged in the Ricote Valley, organized by AADK Spain with the idea of building new communities around sound. An event that draws the spectrum between traditional music and the post-industrial.

The unstoppable rotation continues.
The inevitable change. The world is another.
Rurality is activated as a territory for new practices. Through care, a new sound ecosystem is created from the fissure.
From the local to the global.

Motivation / Philosophy / Curatorship

The proposal introduces a leading program which attracts an audience specialized in vanguard music, and in turn is accessible to a broader audience that will recognize the tradition in the ‘root’ component of authors’ works, created specifically for the festival.

It is important to note that most of the artists on the lineup are invited to create specific pieces for the festival, and are involved in collective creations that connect electronic music with traditional music, bringing together people of different ages, origins and interests.

De la Raíz al Noise is therefore a program that offers something unique, enhancing the essence of traditional art, which represents local territory from the depths, in dialogue with avant-garde sound creation.

We think that the way to promote culture is to create specific and original programs with a strong cross-learning component, and in this way make contemporary creation accessible to very diverse audiences.

The aim of the proposal is to generate curiosity and openness and create links between creators and audiences of very diverse styles.

History

The birth of the festival is a consequence of the educational program AADK Sonora, a school of experimentation, based in the town of Blanca, which has facilitated the collaboration of national and international artists with local groups, giving rise to the creation of musical pieces of experimental character based on traditional music.

To date, two editions of the festival have been carried out, thanks to the invaluable work of the AADK Spain team and to the financial collaboration of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation and the Blanca Town Hall.

Rabih Beaini [LB/DE]

Lebanese-born producer and DJ Rabih Beaini (formerly known as Morphosis) specializes in grainy, imaginative analogue techno. In the past year however, his Morphine label has telescoped in on key (often overlooked) voices in avant-garde electronic and outernational music. As Morphosis, Beaini has been crafting away in the nether-regions of the techno underworld since the 90s.

Having cut his teeth as a DJ, a move to Italy in 1996 proved the catalyst to start experimenting in the studio. And he really did experiment – few people craft the sort of emotional, exploratory techno as Beaini has for labels like Sistrum Recordings (Detroit), M>O>S (Amsterdam), and Styrax (Berlin). His two most recent albums, Albidaya  on Lebanese label Annihaya and Dismantle/Music For Vampyr  on Honest Jon’s, follow his critically acclaimed 2011 debut LP, What Have We Learned, on Delsin.

Beaini’s genuine musical ability and a range of influences—from krautrock to new wave—seep into his inventive, dark, and emotional productions and immersive DJ sets. These influences also find their way into Beani’s productions with the Upperground Orchestra, a multi-headed improvisational ensemble that explores the terrain between electronica, techno, and improvisational jazz. While his productions join the dots between raw, elementary electronica, and jazz, his Morphine label has put forward an equally forward-thinking selection of techno from the likes of Madteo, Hieroglyphic Being, and Anthony “Shake” Shakir.

In 2014, the label entered a new era with a retrospective trilogy of works by US-based improviser and Buchla synth master Charles Cohen. The collection was the most comprehensive ever to be released, and was followed by an album of new material from Cohen in 2015. Beaini served as a producer for this and subsequent LPs from pioneering American composer Pauline Oliveros, French mechanical-orchestra creator Pierre Bastien, and explosive Indonesian duo Senyawa. He has also helped to organize concerts and tours with Cohen and Senyawa throughout Europe and Japan.
